house worms home blog photos links contact my set up problems i've had flies smells escapees what my worms eat using the compost the critters i've seen guide to indoor i set up my worm bin in november 2009. i was apprehensive at the time, as i live in a city flat with no garden space. while i'd heard that people keep worm bins indoors, but i couldn't find any details. this is the web page i wish i'd found before i set up my worm bin. if i had, i would have got my worms a lot sooner! mary appelhoff's book “worms eat my garbage” has been inspirational to me. i've followed mary's guidance quite closely. the only limitation is that the book doesn't offer much advice for keeping your worms exclusively indoors. for what it's worth, here's my advice. my set up my worms live in a transparent tupperware box, 30cm wide, 48cm long, and 38cm deep (12” x 19” x 15”). i drilled lots of small air-holes into the walls and the lid. to start the wormery, i mail-ordered 250g of composting worms from wriggly wrigglers . i compost just about all of our organic kitchen scraps, except for bread and citrus fruit- about 450g a week. these are collected in the kitchen - in a plastic container, covered by a piece of cotton, secured with elastic. i bury the scraps in my wormery, under shredded newspaper, about once or twice a week. my worm bin is divided into 6 sections. i add the scraps to a different section each time i feed the worms. by the time i get back to the first section, most of the old food has decomposed. often a few squishy bits of onion or teabags remain. i usually bury the fresh scraps under these. problems i've encountered here's how i've managed to control problems with flies, odours and worms escaping. flies i had a serious problem with fruit flies for the first few months. i think they came from the scraps i collected in the kitchen, which were uncovered. once there were flies in the wormery, they quickly multiplied. i tried numerous home-made fly traps- none of which worked particularly well. at the worst point i was squishing around 200 flies each day, in and around the wormery. we'd frequently see flies in the flat. the ultimate solution was sticky fly paper. i put a couple of pieces inside the wormery, and within weeks the flies were almost gone. i haven't had trouble with flies since, which i attribute to covering the scraps in the kitchen. six house flies hatched in my wormery too. i'm not sure how they go in there (possibly from mud i swept up from the floor and sprinkled in). since they were newly hatched they couldn't fly well yet, and were easy to catch and release from the window. smell when the scraps are covered with newspaper, my wormery doesn't smell at all. the rotting scraps do smell sometimes. this tends to be when the system gets too wet. this causes a sulphurous smell, which results from anaerobic decomposition. a puddle of about 5mm at the bottom of the box tends to make the scraps smell. i didn't drill any drainage holes in the bottom of my wormery, to avoid leaks. when excess liquid accumulates, i remove it before i bury food scraps. usually, i soak it up into something absorbent (e.g. old tea bags that about to be composted), and squeeze it into a jug. this liquid is a potent plant feed- it should be diluted with 10 parts water before use on pot plants. escapees during the first week a lot of worms escaped. i started with about 200 worms, and lost 20-30 in the first few days. it's common for the worms to escape before they get used to their new home. occasionally the escapees are still alive, but more commonly they are dried out and resemble a twig. these mummified worms are easy to pick up and throw away. aside from that, the only other time they escape is when the system gets too wet. this is easily remedied by adding more shredded newspaper. my worm bin is often unexpectedly wet after heavy rain. whenever i expect bad weather, or i'm going away for a few days, i always add a lot more newspaper. and then i add a bit more. incidentally, the air-holes in the walls of the wormey are big enough for the worms to fit through. i've seen a couple poke their heads through, and then retract. generally, i think they like it better inside than out. what my worms eat i feed just about all our organic kitchen scraps to the worms, except for citrus fruit, bread and cheese. i'd like to experiment with these at some point, but i haven't yet. these are some of the staples in my worms diet: bell peppers onions, leeks, etc. garlic skin broccoli tea bags (black, green and herbal) egg shells root vegetables fruit trimmings cabbage/ kale corn husks squash, courgettes, etc. the skins of squash and avocado can take a couple of months to break down in my system. tea bags and onion also last a bit longer than the other scraps. the fibrous stems (e.g. from bell peppers) rot down to a cellulose skeleton that crumbles quite easily. generally, i bury everything under shredded newspaper. i have also used egg cartons, corrugated card, dried up leaves from my plants, and old bank statements. compost i haven't yet mastered the art of using the compost harvested from my wormery. what i do know is that it's very potent, and many plants and seedlings can't survive in neat compost. i've had success with tomato and bean plants in worm compost mixed with old soil recovered from last years' pot plants. a 1:1 ratio of worm compost to used soil resulted in healthy, productive plants. i've recently planted garlic cloves in a 1:1 mixture of worm compost and peat-free commercial compost. i don't have results from those experiments yet... when the wormey starts getting too wet, a puddle accumulates at the bottom. if the puddle is deeper than about 5 mm, i try to remove the excess liquid. old tea bags work well for soaking up the liquid. i squeeze the liquid into a jug, and dilute it with 10 parts water. my pot plants thrive with these added nutrients. critters in my wormery initially i added a mixture of composting worms ( eisenia sp. ). within weeks, springtails and pot worms had moved in. soon after, i noticed tiny mites, of various colours, although mostly white. one of the most interesting guests was a slime mould, that moved around the edge of the wormery for a week or so. i think i must have disturbed it when i buried some scraps, as i've never seen it again. perhaps it continues to exist it the single celled form.
